Fluorescent penetrant inspection (FPI) is a type of dye penetrant inspection in which a fluorescent oil-based dye is applied to the surface of a non-porous meterial in order to detect any defects that may compromise the integrity or quality of the part in question. FPI is used widely in a variety of industries. The most commonly used name for this technique is called NDT (non-destructive testing).
